New Oil Drain Plugs are manufactured with various Rockwell Hardness levels, they are slightly softer or equal to the metal threads in the oil pan. This is done to help prevent Cross-Threading issues when inserting and tightening after an oil change.

Because it is common to over tighten plugs and they are used over and over again, most plugs in use today have been compromised due to thread stretch and deformation. Not only is this bad for the engine if oil is lost, reusing a plug eventually damages the oil drain pan threads.

It is a fact that most every professional technician and most OEM suggest changing them and the gasket with every oil service. Obviously replacing an oil pan is a hundred times the cost of a drain plug, so don't wait until there's a problem.
